The Project for the People of Paraguay's entire volunteer staff would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generous help and to tell you about some of the developments you have supported. Your sponsorship dollars have enhanced your sponsored child's life through education, health and dental care and has helped his/her family to come closer to their dream of a brighter future. Today, PPP is happy to report that through the development of such programs as the dental and garden projects, and the adult training programs in sewing and cosmetology, the families and community sponsored by the PPP have already shown signs of economic recovery. Your contributions have helped expand our resources to continue the job training and employment placement. Already, PPP has there young women who have graduated with honors from the beauty academy, and 13 sponsored mothers have "graduated" from the PPP sewing class. These women are busy sewing school uniforms for the sponsored children when they are not working at their part-time jobs at a clothing factory. We are presently in negotiations with Habitat for Humanity International and government officials of Asuncion, Paraguay, to purchase land an build a community away from the slums now lived in, for the Paraguayan families who you generously sponsor. PPP Director, Sheri Bitzan, will be traveling to Paraguay in late April for two weeks of negotiations with our friends Habitat and local government officials as well as talks with community leaders. During this same trip, Sheri will begin construction of the PPP beauty salon in Asuncion, Paraguay. It is PPP hope that besides providing job opportunities for our three cosmetology graduates, the salon profits will provide income for the PPP training and job placement program. Dental Program Started for Sponsored Children Dental student Phillipi Cespedes, as part of his final year at the Dental University of Asuncion, has volunteered his time and expertise to assist PPP Paraguay Director, Maria Castillo with the dental program. Every Friday and Sunday, Phillipi goes to the homes of sponsored families to start charts and perform routine dental exams and evaluations. Phillipi has formed a committee of people who will be in charge of bringing the children to the dental office for necessary dental work. Phillipi is also preparing several educational seminars for the families as part of this year long program that started May 1, 1997. One goal is to have all necessary dental work completed for each and every PPP sponsored child by the end of the program. PPP dreams of keeping Phillipi on as a part-time dentist after he graduates. |
