The Institute del Manana, in English the I
nstitute of Tomorrow is a residential program for
boys, patterned after to Boys Town in the United States. Boys who have had some
contact with the law live, work and attend school in the facility on a full time basis.
In an attempt to replicate family life, approximately 12 boys of differing ages
live in a very
attractive cottage with their "house parents" who look after them. In
their home the boys learn to help one another, do chores such as preparing meals and to do
their own laundry. A point system with specific rewards is used to teach
responsibility.
A full educational curriculum is in place to
meet the boys individualized needs, all the
way through the upper grades. Also taught are the job skills the boys will need to
earn a living after graduation. These include metal working, plumbing, auto repair,
carpentry, shoe making and farming.
All academic and job skill training takes place in a separate educational building
surrounded with beautiful open fields, soccer playing fields and farm fields. There
is also an
administrative building which houses the school store and medical facility.
Graduates of the program have used their training to move onto full productive lives
with families of their own. A few of the graduates have even become counselors at
the institute. One is now in Argentina helping to establish a similar institution.
