After the fall of the dictatorship of General Alfredo Stroessner in 1989, thousands of Paraguayans returned to a country ravaged by poverty. Although Paraguay is now democratic, its people are still struggling to establish a political and economic future.Chacarita Alleyway

Many people have moved to the capital city of Asuncion seeking employment only to find themselves living in the Chacarita slum. The population of the slum has grown from 30,000 to 60,000 in just three years. Families face daily trial to meet such basic needs a food, clothing and shelter. Adequate medical care is almost nonexistent.

A Sponsored ChildThe Project for the People of Paraguay (PPP) was founded in 1992 by Sheri Bitzan, an adoptive parent of a Paraguayan boy. After becoming aware of the harsh conditions, Sheri returned to Paraguay and established the PPP, which has initiated a child sponsorship program as well as other fund-raising campaigns.

The mission of the PPP is to serve the impoverished children, families and communities of Paraguay bySponsored Child providing needed health care, education, human development and other basic life needs to create a long term improvement program that will eventually give back to itself and become self sustaining.
