The Project for the People of Paraguay (PPP) is glad to report that through the development of such programs as the Dental and Garden Projects, and the adult training programs in sewing,Sherri Bitzan With PPP's Sewing Instructor metal working, and cosmetology, the families and community sponsored by the PPP have already shown signs of economic recovery.

As of the summer of 1997, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense's DENTON Program, PPP has air lifted millions of dollars in supplies and humanitarian aid. Through these and other monetary donations the PPP has already built facilities to address the needs of it's sponsored families including:

bulletdaycare
bulletmedical & dental, and
bulleta bathhouse & laundry facility.

May was blanket month. All the sponsored children received a warm blanket from their sponsors. All the children and adults who were fire victims received several articles of clothing,Coloring Pictures for Sponsors shoes, cooking utensils, dishes, school supplies, school shoes and uniforms, buckets, cleaning supplies, person hygiene products and tooth brushes. All day long there seemed to be a steady stream of children and adults coming to the PPP office to request additional items. PPP has developed an incentive program where parents and children can work towards earning points to purchase beds, linens and other items for their new homes.

Fire

Unfortunately, as many of you know, this year's news was not all good. In April of 1997 a fire swept through a section of the Chacarita where many PPP sponsored families lived. Although there was thankfully, no loss of life, many families lost what little possessions they had. As a result of this devastation the PPP has had to expend much of its immediate resources to the needs of those families and the acceleration of the relocation project. Sherri Bitzan is currently seeking to forge a new alliance with Habitat for Humanity in Paraguay to ease the living situation and create a more stable community located outside of the Chacarita. Please keep them all in your prayers.

The fire destroyed 31 homes in the neighborhood that surrounds the Koe-ju daycare and medical / dental facility. At that time many sponsors sent additional funds to help the fire victims.

The only damage to Koe-ju was done to the brick wall around the facility, which was destroyed. Twelve of the 31 homes destroyed belonged to PPP sponsored families. Twelve families were housed at the Koe-ju facility, all 85 bodies, and not all have yet found new homes.
