In Asuncion street children present a very big problem. A full 81% of all children who work in the streets have families, but these families are extremely dysfunctional. The children must bring home a specified amount of money each night, or they are punished by their parents. Only 19% of all street children have no families. PPP visited a facility that is making a difference in working with 150 boys who live and work on the streets in Asuncion. It is called Don Bosco Roga, or Don Bosco house in Guarani (the native language still in current use in Paraguay). Begun in 1992, the facility, under the direction of Padre Matin Rodriguez, the program houses, feeds and educates 110 boys, and feeds an additional 40. This multi-step program addresses the basic living needs of food and shelter for the youngest street children, who come to the facility voluntarily. Also stressed is basic education along with social skills, music, the arts and job training. |
