From the Dec. 1999 Newsletter
As part of his final year at the Dental University of Every Friday and Sunday Phillipi went to the homes of sponsored families
to start charts and to perform routine dental exams and evaluations. Many of the children
had serious dental health problems because of poor oral hygiene, lack of available dental
care and poor diet when they were very young. All this added up to each child needing
several visits. He also formed a committee of people to bring children to the One goal of the program was to have all necessary dental work completed for each and every PPP sponsored child by the end of the program. Many volunteers including sponsor Mary Hoffman from Madison WI, worked in the PPP dental office and assisted Dr. Cespedes. Mary had the opportunity to meet her sponsored child and assisted with some extensive dental work on her. Mary worked from morning until evening cleaning and applying sealant to approximately 50 children. Unfortunately, before the dental program was completed, Dr. Cespedes was injured in a motorcycle accident. His left elbow was severely fractured which has left him unable to perform any dental procedures. However, Dr. Cespedes worked hard to locate five volunteer dentists to fill his shoes. These dentists work on a rotating schedule so there is a dentist every day at the PPP dental clinic. PPP always welcomes volunteer dental personnel to assist with our dental program. If interested please contact the PPP office. The next scheduled trip to Paraguay is September 3-15, 1998. Lodging is available at the PPP office complex. |
