"Girls and Women of Dignity" is a project organized andChildren implemented by the Project for the People of Paraguay.  This new and exciting program will provide long term support services for Paraguayan girls and women helping to empower them to make positive and lasting changes in their lives.

There are many challenges that girls and women face in Paraguay:

bulletHigh drop out rate in school education
bulletParaguay is rated #2 in the world for corruption
bulletPoor economic status in Paraguay
bulletHigh percentage of population live in extreme poverty
bulletIlliteracy
bulletLack of child/women protective laws
bulletHealth problems/no access to health care
bulletProstitution and trafficking
bulletLack of job opportunities
bulletLack of job training for sustainable and adequate income
bulletMale dominated society

The Project for the People of Paraguay is currently working with 100 families in Paraguay through the PPP child sponsorship program and relocation project.  Over the years many changes have been set in motion.  The path of change was a journey that was filled with peaks and valleys, frustration and reward, resistance and hope.  Many times doubt, fear and lack of trust blocked the path.  This too we came to understand as a positive process that we needed to endure in order to move forward.  All of us together learned ways to recognize and resolve fear, strengthen trust and build confidence and courage.  But there is still so much to do.  The PPP has witnessed the many enormous challenges facing the women and children of Paraguay and have decided that we are going to do something about it and we're going to start now with the birth of "Girls and Women of Dignity".

"Girls and Women of Dignity" will provide support services for girls and women in four levels:

bulletLevel 1 - 5 to 8 years old
bulletLevel 2 - 9 to 13 years old
bulletLevel 3 - 14 years old through graduation from high school
bulletLevel 4 - Adult women

Once a month a counselor will meet with each candidate and will listen, research and respond to the needs of the girls and women.  There will be monthly individual meetings as well as group meetings that will work on issues of:

bulletEducation
bulletHealth and psychological education and service
bulletSelf esteem and self confidence
bulletSexuality education and reproductive information
bulletDomestic violence
bulletHuman rights
bullet Sexual assault
bulletAdult education and job placement
bulletSelf sufficiency and/or micro-businesses through loans and financial assistance
bulletLegal Services
